HAVING FUN: Twins Sienna and Devon Hopkins enjoy the pajama and movie day organised by the Burnside Primary School pupil council. The council comes up with a plan each term for a day where pupils can have fun. More photos on page 7.

„„ By Andrew King AN AMBITIOUS plan to form a sports club cluster in the north-west to lobby for funding and other benefits has failed. Westminster Sports Inc started in 2006 and combined the interests of a number of sports clubs and organisations clustered around Mairehau, Marshland, Shirley, Papanui, Merivale, St Albans and Redwood with more than 2000 members from eight different sports codes. Member clubs unanimously accepted the recommendation of the board to wind up the operations of the organisation at a special general meeting. Lack of funding and commitment from member clubs led to its demise, said Westminster chairman Rob Smith. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board had funded Westminster Sports $16,000 in 2013 and a further $16,000 in 2014 from its discretionary

response fund. Clubs included Canterbury Area Judo Association, Canterbury Australian Football League, Canterbury Lacrosse Club, Christchurch Football Club, Christchurch Football Club Netball, Christchurch Football Club Squash, Western Association Football Club and Korfball Canterbury. Mr Smith said while it’s a regrettable and difficult decision to make, this was something that had been looming for some time. “This reflects the significant challenges associated with running a viable sporting organisation in the current environment, he said. Mr Smith said there were a number of factors that contributed to the idea not working. He said the financial position of the organisation was such that operation beyond a two to three month time frame was not viable and member clubs were not engaged to the degree necessary to ensure or create a viable business model.

Tuesday August 9 2016 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

WELL, THE Olympics are upon us and I for one am considering doing a few early mornings of intense television watching before work. It will be a hard grind during the day, but I feel that coffee will do its job – it is only every four years we get to see this. I’ve very fond memories watching the Olympics growing up and am hoping they will keep their magic. This week we have a very special guest in the paper – Maleficent. I’m led to believe by the little people in my life that she is rather scary but also quite a cool character. Reporter Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to Tyra Adlam who portrays the character while doing charity work. Apparently children have very mixed reactions when they see her. Page 14-15 has the interview. Hei kona.

$230k-plus for projects

Fashion By Andrew King THE SHIRLEY-PAPANUI Community Board will allocate more than $230,000 to community services, trusts and churches for projects throughout the north-west. Every year the board uses its strengthening communities fund to help local organisations keep programmes running and start up new ones to benefit those in its ward. The board had $238,918 to disperse throughout the community – it will spend almost $200,000 on support workers and programmes in the northwest area, the rest will be spent on new equipment for programmes and rent. Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown said the money is a huge help to small groups throughout the area. “We had a bit left over so we have topped up a learn to swim programme, which is awesome,” he said. Mr Keown said it was a “pretty straight-forward process”. “The people who work behind the scenes to get the right funding going to the right people know what they are doing,

vidson said although there is no money at the moment for the garden awards, they will still go ahead. It also rejected a proposal for salary costs towards a toy library supervisor for the Papanui Community Toy Library and Papanui Youth Development Trust had funding denied towards the salary of the trust manager. “It’s never easy to deny fund-

In Brief NO STOPPING APPROVED The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has approved no stopping lines on five streets. Sail, Wiremu, Dalriada Sts and St James Ave, Brenton Close and Langdons Rd all had no stopping restrictions approved at last Wednesday’s meeting. Wiremu St also had P120 parking restrictions proposed for it but the board decided parking on the street was not bad enough to warrant restrictions. COMMUNITY CENTRE Plans for the new St Albans Community Centre will come back to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board for sign off before heading into the detailed design process. Board chairman Mike Davidson was pleased with the momentum of the project saying it was a huge priority for the board. The plans will be at the board meeting on August 17. ROADWORKS Roading repairs mean Forfar St, between Westminister and Warrington Sts, is one-way north bound. There is no right or left turn into Forfar from Westminster. Southbound traffic may use Mayfield Ave or Mersey St and Berwick St to get to Forfar St.

Students put on a show By Georgia O’Connor-Harding NATIONAL Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art students took to the stage recently in a bid to showcase their talent and fundraise for their next production. The third-year students raised money for special effects and costumes for their upcoming musical Ragtime, written by American’s Stephen Flaherty, Terrence McNally and Lynn Ahrens. It will open next month. They took the opportunity to preview a snippet of the upcoming production. Our Children, a song from the musical, was previewed at the concert. The production is based on the book by E.L Doctorow and covers three families pursuing the American dream. Morgan Mackenzie-Moore, of St Albans, took part in the show and will star in Ragtime next month. A variety of contemporary and musical theatre was performed at the concert, along with solos, duets, contemporary dance, tap dance, cultural and full ensemble numbers. Performances included songs from the musicals Wicked, The

very rewarding process,” she said. About 50 performers from the entire school performed in the preview show. Ragtime will be performed at the Gym in the Christchurch Arts Centre from September 1-4. Tickets are available at www. eventbrite.co.nz

FUNDRAISERS: The New Zealand members of a Star Wars fan club who spend hundreds of hours building their own movie-quality costumes have spent some time “being bad guys doing good”. They raised $8000 for the Kids Hospital Appeal. They are part of a group call Outpost 42, which is the New Zealand garrison of world-wide Star Wars costume organisation, the 501st Legion. On Saturday, they were at Northlands Shopping Centre raising money for charity and posing for photos.

Work on Papanui cycle network to ramp up

Fashion WORK WILL begin on the Papanui Parallel cycleway in the next two months. It is one of four key projects in the development of Christchurch’s cycleway network that will start in the next two months, adding more than 15km to the cycleway network. City council manager of transport planning and delivery Lynette Ellis said the new cycleways were exciting. “We are really creating options for people to consider alternative ways to travel. It’s the people that aren’t already on bicycles who might have been worried about safety, or put off by access, that we are targeting with these networks,” she said. As well as the Papanui Parallel, construction of the Little River Link cycleway and the first stage of the Rapanui-Shag Rock cycleway will begin. They are part of 13 cycleways which will cost about $156 million to construct. They aim to make cycling in Christchurch safer and more appealing. Route design and public consultation will get under way on the Northern Line cycleway and the

Heathcote Expressway. The city council will also work with schools and businesses to encourage them to make use of the cycleways and provide safe, secure cycle parking facilities. “We’re offering people a genuine choice that feels safer for them. I do think it will get people out of cars and onto bikes. For example, a family in Redwood might actually see cycling to Northlands mall as a viable option if there is a safe cycleway,”

In Brief PARK UPGRADE An upgrade to Abberley Park to ensure equipment meets the current New Zealand playground safety standards will start next year. The upgrade will also ensure an acceptable level of community service is maintained, including accessible spaces and equipment. The playground, which sits beside Abberley Park Hall, is due for replacement as part of the city council’s playground renewal programme. The proposed plan includes a two-bay swing set with a basket swing to improve accessibility, as well as a wheelchair-friendly carousel. RESIDENTS’ WORKSHOP The city council’s Edgeware Village Project Team is organising a workshop for residents, businesses and other stakeholders to discuss the next stage of the area’s street design. This will be held on August 29, from 5.30-7.15pm at the Mainland Football Head Office, 127 Cranford St, St Albans. The workshop will provide an opportunity to consider the implications of decisions on recent projects and whether community views have changed. Results of a recent survey of parking in

the village will be presented and discussed. For more information, email jennie. hamilton@ccc.govt.nz or phone 941 5207. NEIGHBOURHOOD WEEK Applications are now open for a small subsidy from the Shirley-Papanui Community Board for activities celebrating Neighbourhood Week. For more information visit www. ccc.govt.nz/ culture-andcommunity/events-andfestivals/ annual-events/ neighbourhoodweek/ Closing date for applications is August 19 at 5pm. FUNDING APPROVED The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has approved $11,500 in funding from its discretionary response fund for three committee projects and a student heading overseas. It approved $2000 to Te Ora Hou Otautahi Inc for Te Pihi Ora Hou after school mentoring programme. A further $4000 was allocated for neighbourhood week and $5000 to Canterbury Cook Island Sports to host more events. Papanui High School student Eloise Antoinette Clark was granted $500 to go towards a cultural tour of Japan.

Rangi staff recognised for teaching excellence SEVERAL STAFF from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School have been recognised with a number of awards. Art teacher Kate Rivers has been recognised in the 2016 Independent Schools of New Zealand Honours Awards for her service to art education. One of Rangi’s longest serving staff members Frances Barnett has been recognised at the Boarding School Association’s national conference in Queenstown for her contribution and dedication. On top of those the physical education team has received an award from Physical Education New Zealand for demonstrating excellence in their field. Principal Sandra Hastie said the awards acknowledge the very high quality of teaching staff at the school as well as how hard everyone works to ensure that the students always get the very best from staff and teachers. “Rangi is about people. Our girls, our staff, our families and the wider community around the school,” she said.

ACHIEVERS “We are only as good as our people and it’s great to see the acknowledgement our people are exceptional.” Dr Hastie said what she sees as a common thread through the awards and winners is a focus on each girl and in a broad and holistic way. “Frances’s work in the boarding house is legendary. Kate’s work with our students around well-being is invaluable and her dedication to sustainability issues shows a depth in her as a person, of which we are very proud,” she said. “Last and by no means least our PE department. This recognition of their innovative programme was about the focus on the ‘whole girl’ with an emphasis on competency development and transformation teaching and learning practices,” she said.

Your Local Views Buy fair trade to help improve workers’ lives

News This week’s opinion piece is written by Selwyn House School pupil Estella Valenski about buying fair trade clothing

or a Third World country, it’s highly likely that the people who made those items have been paid such a small amount of money and have had to work in shocking conditions. Firstly, the workers shouldn’t be working in the conditions they are working in.

Fashion CLOTHES, YOU all wear them, you all are wearing them now. How many of you have stopped to take a look at the label on those clothes? Because if it was made in Asia

Some workers faint while they are working because of exhaustion, heat and poor nutrition. Diseases can spread very easily so the damp cold working places don’t help. Secondly, many of the factories that these workers are in have no health and safety policies or guidelines, they have the windows and doors locked with little ventilation. There is no regard for the rights or well-being of their employees. In Asian factories more than 40,000 fingers are lost or broken each year.

Thirdly, just wait until I tell you the massive profits that are being made when we buy these products in good faith. We buy these products not realising the conditions these products were made in and what the employees were paid to make the products. The conditions for the workers are terrible and it should stop. If we help increase the number of businesses with fair trade we can make a huge difference. We can help the workers live a more comfortable life. They will have good nutrition in their bodies and will work in

Harewood intersection. It’s a horrible intersection that I avoid if I can.

Readers respond to last week’s article on a petition launched to fix the Harewood Rd intersection

Readers respond to an article about the possibility of resident parking permits to alleviate parking issues around suburban streets

Adrienne Russell, of Bishopdale: I have lived in the area for 22 years. I firmly believe this intersection needs looking at immediately, as it is four lanes to cross and the traffic does not travel at 50km/h which makes a decision to cross the road and judging the traffic dangerous. All our neighbours are of the same opinion and when you get an elderly person whose judgement is not as quick as a younger person’s, they hold the traffic up. A lot of the traffic, goes left out of Gardiners Rd and up to the first bay to turn then travels in whichever direction they want to go. The same coming out of Breens Rd, they turn left then take the first bay opposite Copenhagen to turn back along Harewood Rd. I will definitely be signing the petition.

Jenny Glasson, of Ilam: Fully support this initiative, it’s the only fair way to compensate living close to the university. We have traditionally been penalised by living close, and now just have parking ones side. However, all that side is completely taken up now with tradespeople parking while work is completed on the campus. By 6.45am the street is full. We are penalised if we have tradespeople to undertake repairs in our homes. The university needs to provide parking on the campus, that’s another issue however, it was unfair to limit parking for residents. To go into service centres and organise cones for special events is impractical. This initiative is in place in other centres, I believe in Wellington.

PARKING WOES: Restrictions will soon be installed on Harewood Rd meaning residents will not be able to park outside of their properties longer than 120min.

St, some with 120 parking, have repeatedly suggested resident parking permits but have been blocked by city council staff. This in spite of presenting photos of cities like Auckland and many cities overseas showing areas with resident parking. One of the issues on parking is the failure of businesses to provide a realistic level of parking for staff thus forcing them to park all day on residential streets. Another is the naive planning concept of one parking space per apartment. For example, apartments in the south Riccarton

area are occupied by several people, each having a vehicle which means the streets are jammed with their vehicles as well as those from the mall staff parking all day. It is a pity Environment Canterbury cannot carry out more useful surveys that would examine the travel requirements of workers. For example, vehicles are queued from Riccarton all the way up Straven and Idris Rds in the mornings. Perhaps a more innovative approach to public transport would help with traffic and consequently parking problems.

a safe and clean environment. So buy fair trade and help these workers. How do you know you are buying fair trade? There should be a sticker on the product or a sign when you walk in the door of the shop indicating it is fair trade. So are you going to make a difference and help the workers who make your clothes live a better life? Do you make an effort to buy fair trade? Share your views with us. Email andrew. king@starmedia.kiwi The proposed city plan also allows for taller commercial buildings in commercial areas such as Riccarton which increases the number of workers and thus will exasperate the traffic and hence parking problems. The university also contributes to parking problems in surrounding streets. The restricted parking, P120 or P60, does have positive benefits. It prevents the all day high density parking with vehicles parked on or even over driveways making it difficult and dangerous for residents to exit their properties. In my area it allows for visitors to local residences, as well as providing parking for those wanting to nip into a business or for lunch and for Riccarton Bush activities. The issue here is that there are those who persistently abuse the time limit and park all day. The city council does not have enough staff to patrol all such areas and the odd fine is still cheap parking. Perhaps a three strikes and then increased fine might assist. However, in the end, alternatives to alleviate stress on parking need to be found. Registering tradespeople vehicles with the city council for all day parking certainly worked well when we had repairs being carried out on our house. I would certainly support the call for resident parking permits across the city.

Schoolgirl rugby teams named By Andrew King EIGHTEEN PLAYERS in the north-west have been selected in two Canterbury school rugby teams to compete in the South Island Secondary School Girls’ Rugby Tournament next month. Canterbury will play host to the South Island’s best school girl rugby talent with teams from Otago, Southland, Tasman and Hanan Shield Districts looking to topple the defending champions. Burnside High School’s Latai Kaufusi and Freya Aldridge, Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Laura Thomas, Grace Brooker and Rosie Kelly and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s Isa-

bella Carter have been selected in the Canterbury school girls’ A squad. Sammy Moore, Kezia FowlerBlyth, Jaidyn Busch, Alice Dalzell, Molly Simpson, Zoe Levien, Naia Toaolani-Holden and Salome Naiku, of CGHS, Burnside’s Rosa Samuelu and Sarah Hanrahan, Papanui High School’s Brooke Mitchell Michaelee McDonald and Rangi Ruru’s Sarita De Gouw were all selected in the development squad. Canterbury will field two teams in the competition, with the South Island Junior and Teenage Rugby Board agreeing to a second “development” team from Canterbury.

The Canterbury A team will be coached by Tevita Siulangapo and Katie Stanton, and coaches are yet to be appointed for the development team. Siulangapo said the inclusion of two local teams is great news for women’s rugby in the region. “A tournament like this allows players to develop their game under different coaches and against some really tough opposition,” he said. “More Canterbury school players will get that opportunity this year and hopefully that results in more of the girls choosing to carry on with the game after secondary school.” The tournament will be held from September 25 to 27.

SAVE THE date. The With This Ring Bridal Show is rolling around for another year. It will be held on August 28 at the Air Force Museum in Wigram. This year’s show will have 85 exhibitors ranging from wedding and bridesmaid gowns, photography, honeymoons, flowers, stationary, caterers, venue hire and many more. On top of that, there will be more than $22,000 of prizes to be won. A wedding and honeymoon at Norfolk Island will be up for grabs, as well as a honeymoon at The Edgewater Resort and Spa in Rarotonga. Brides-to-be can go in the draw to win a wedding gown, up to the value of $3895, from To Cherish Bridal Boutique. Venue hire of the Wigram Base, up to the value of $4050, will be up for grabs, along with many more prizes and giveaways. Two fashion catwalks will be held, one at 11am and the other at 2pm, showcasing wedding gowns and mother-of-the bride outfits.

Event manager Mark Sinclair said this year’s event would be “bigger and better” than last year’s inaugural one. “If they are just needing the last few things or they are wanting to plan their whole wedding, this show has everything under the one roof.” He said there was a wide range of exhibitors and stalls to look at to plan your special day. “There are so many specialists that are there under one roof so people can go at their own leisure and talk to them and plan their day. Then they can make appointments to go back at a later date and follow up.” • The With This Ring Bridal Show will be held at the Air Force Museum in Wigram, on August 28, from 9.30am4pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door, or online at dashtickets.co.nz

MATT DOOCEY

MP FOR WAIMAKARIRI CHAT WITH MATT Northwood business people enjoyed engaging with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon Bill English, at a special session I arranged. Our businesses are behind the success of our region’s economic growth and I am always looking at ways to support them. Latest statistics confirm Canterbury’s small business economy has grown faster than anywhere in the country. It was great to bring the Minister to Northwood to speak to business people about what’s happening in our area. I enjoyed meeting Casebrook, Northwood and Belfast residents at my Keeping Connected Evening Meeting at Belfast Rugby Football Club. I was impressed by people taking time out at night to attend and the liveliness of the discussions. It’s about keeping connected through these night meetings, my caravan

clinics or just living and working in the electorate with my family. As Deputy Chair of the Social Services Select Committee and having a background in mental health, it was important to me to bring the Social Services Select Committee to Canterbury to hear from service providers about their response to communities’ psycho-social recovery needs in post-earthquake Canterbury. I worked to ensure there was crossparty representation for the visit in recognition of Parliament’s continued support of our recovery. Speaking at the Belfast-Kaiapoi Rotary Club last week, I was impressed by the community spirit that was very much in evidence. I look forward to working with the Belfast-Kaiapoi club in any way I can. As always, I’m here to help.

Tyra Adlam aka Maleficent

Playing the villain for charity

Your Local Views Tyra Adlam, of St Albans, has a second life as one Disney’s most-loved villains, Maleficent. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to her about the reaction she gets when undertaking charity work dressed as the “mistress of all evil”

Why did you decide to dress up as Maleficent? A lot of it had to do with being drawn to gothic characters. Characters that are crazy pale, with colourful eyes decked out in black. Maleficent is very commanding and powerful. I have so much more confidence in my real life now after dressing as this character. What was it like when you made your first public appearance as Maleficent? It was Halloween and I ended up going on a bus trip and having a great time. I didn’t realise New Zealand had these Armageddon expos. When I went to my first expo I had no idea what to expect. I spent the first hour posing for photos. The reaction was staggering. My character encourages strength and power. Meeting like-minded people in the community was great, too. I got into charity events through that. The goal now, with my friend Darth Vader, is to do as

much good as possible. Our characters both know what it’s like to suffer. We both want to give back to people who need help – there is nothing in this world like it. What events do you attend as Maleficent? I go to Armageddon, and do charity and not-for-profit work with the Christchurch Faerie Circle. What do you do as a day job? I have worked at the Christchurch Horror Maze over the summer as a scare actress. Because of health issues I’ve got, I can’t really do a great deal. So it hasn’t been an easy journey? No. Ever since I was diagnosed with a chronic illness it has been ongoing. Finding the right balance is so important because you can do too much. Some days are really good but you can push yourself a little too much and your body can protest the next day. One of the reasons I

MAGIC: Tyra dresses as the Disney character Maleficent when she does charity work. PHOTO: KIRSTY LEE

love being Maleficent is because it is not about me. When I do a charity event as Maleficent it is not about me and my issues, it is entirely about someone else. It is really nice focusing yourself

on people in need, rather than focusing on yourself. It is a way for me to get out of my own head and realise other people have stuff going on as well. You have a great outlook.

You kind of have to. You get to a point where you can either sit there and be miserable about the things you can’t change, or you can invest your energy into the good stuff. Tell me about your family? I have a sister who is incredibly supportive. My parents live in Te Puki, near Tauranga. It is the Kiwifruit capital of New Zealand. My family think it is great I dress up. There is this idea that it is weird and there can be judgment, but my family think it is great. They get right behind it and support it. My sister is an artist. She is a painter that just got into sculpting and is very creative. My grand-father, who passed away in 1997, was into pottery so there has always been an artistic influence in my family. Have you ever considered going into acting? I have toyed with the idea. But with my chronic illness, there is no telling how I will be on any one day. Charity events do not happen too often and they are only for a few hours. Even if I don’t feel great, there is the reward of helping others and I can push myself through. But it is a matter of listening to what the body is saying.

WORKING FOR CHARITY: Tyra with Flat Man (middle) and the Christchurch Faerie Circle at an Imagination Station charity event. PHOTO: ANGELA JONES

And how old are you? I am 36. All my friends complain they are getting older, but I am getting closer to 40 and love it. It is actually really exciting. In my 20s, I was like most people. I was relatively self-absorbed, self-focused and a bit dramatic. Obviously living though the earthquakes was a pretty traumatic experience. That was when I realised I needed help. I had extensive therapy. I needed to

address over-coming my grief. I knew people who died in the 2011 earthquake. But I have now put that trauma behind me. The main thing is to keep moving forward. How do children react when they see you? It does vary. I have done some faerie events where children come rushing up to me and throw their arms around me. On the flip-side, some find my

ACTING: Tyra with Disney’s Sleeping Beauty aka Arabella Nimmo.

Gardening whole look intimidating. I have been known to have done charity events where children look at me and burst into tears. When you were younger did you enjoy fairy tales? I was always drawn to the dark characters. When I was

four-years-old I remember going into kindergarten and the teacher asked what we want to be when we grew up. I wanted to be Lily Munster because she was a vampire. When I started watching Disney movies I found the villains interesting.

Old-school princesses were one dimensional. Nowadays you have movies like Frozen where the princesses have their own defined personalities. But back in the earlier days, their entire existence was having a man save them and there was nothing exciting about that. And I take it you are pleased about the Disney films getting made these days? It is one of the things Frozen has done. It is redefining what true love is. It is nice seeing princess characters who actually are characters. The reason the character Anna from the film Frozen is so relatable is because she is quirky and goofy. Do you think there is good in all people? That is a hard one to answer because at what point do you say a person needs help and at what point do you say they are beyond help? I think we have all found ourselves in situations that compromise our moral compass. We do live in a society where people are hard on each other. Just look at social media and the bullying that is online these days. People hide behind their computers and say horrendous things.

FOOD

Ultimate Winter

Comfort Food As winter starts to take it’s hold (albeit late), there is nothing better on a cold evening than to sit down to a hot aromatic rich meal with gravy. This beef and ale pie checks all the boxes. It does take some planning though. the good news is you can just make it as a hearty stew & serve with your choice of vegetables if you prefer. Although a slow cooker is preferred, there is no reason why you can’t casserole this in the oven. Makes 6 individual or one large pie. ingredients 1kg Chuck steak or gravy beef cut into chunks Olive oil 1 large onion 2 Cloves garlic 1 Large carrot 2Tbsp plain flour 1/4 Cup gravy powder

1/2 Cup beef stock 330ml Beer 2Tbsp tomato paste 1Tbsp worcester sauce Salt & pepper Mushrooms coarsley chopped (optional) Short crust pastry for the base Flaky puff pastry for top

Coat beef with seasoned flour & brown in oil. Transfer to slowcooker. Place all other ingredients in, set to low for 6 hours. Check for thickness, add thickening if required, cool. Prepare pie casing. When meat is cool divide between them. put the tops on sealing with a little milk. Brush with lightly beaten egg. Bake at 200 deg celcius in the lower oven for about 25mins or until golden. Remove from oven to a cooling rack. For best results make sure the pastry is well refridgerated before using.

For the perfect finish It only takes a few minutes to mix, microwave and top these hot chocolate puds with ice cream and liqueur for a rich, indulgent dessert Ingredients 150ml milk 50g pitted prunes 2 tsp instant coffee 50g soft butter 50g icing sugar 1 large egg

50g ground almonds 2 tbsp cocoa 1 tbsp self-raising flour 4 scoops coffee or vanilla ice cream, to serve (optional) 4 tsp coffee liqueur, to serve (optional)

Measure the milk in a large jug, then blend with the prunes and coffee in a food processor until smooth. Add the butter, sugar, egg, almonds, cocoa, flour and a pinch of salt, then blitz again to make a thick batter. Scrape evenly and cleanly (don’t take the mixture up the sides) into 4 x 175ml ramekins (don’t use any with metal on them!). Cook in the microwave, spaced round the edge of the turntable, on Medium for 6 mins. The puddings will still look a bit moist, but that’s fine. Stand for 5 mins, then serve topped with a scoop of ice cream and a little liqueur, if you like.

SCHOOL OPTIONS – early and middle years 2017

Studying commercial practice St Mark’s our tradition By Murray Williams, Papanui Heritage Group JANET Tillman’s reflections are continued with an emphasis on her school years and postschool employment. In 1967, Janet started at Papanui High School. She chose a commercial option in form 3, now year 9, and although core subjects, maths, science, english and social studies were taught, her course locked her into studying typing and commercial practice up to at least her fifth form year (year 11). She left Papanui High with University Entrance but opted to seek employment using her commercial training. She first worked for the shipping agent A.H Turnbull. She found that her typing skills were useful in preparing bills of lading, invoices and cheques. Office technology probably reflected the norm for older Christchurch firms at the time. Although communication with shipping companies was by telex the rest of

OLD SCHOOL: An example of the data entry peripherals used with the computer at Firestone in the 1970s. the equipment was ancient and, in the four years Janet was with the firm, nothing was updated. Her next job was as an accounts clerk with the American company of Firestone in their large complex in Langdons Rd. Janet’s responsibility was to prepare the monthly costings for tyre prices. Working conditions and pay were excellent and the company was prepared to invest in its staff to the extent that it offered her 10 hours per week to study accountancy in the firm’s time. Firestone was at the cutting edge of new technology and towards the end of her time there the firm started to install

a computer system, a development that was later to result in office redundancies. Janet remembers the divide between the factory workers who manufactured the tyres, at this stage an exclusively male work force in comparison to the office staff which included male and female labour. The rubber workers were unionised and strikes were used to win better pay and conditions. Office staff and factory workers used different cafeteria facilities as the production process resulted in the workers being exposed to carbon black and therefore the clothes of anyone later sitting in the same seat would have been damaged. During this time Janet returned to her old school to take advantage of Papanui High’s extensive night school programme. She took woodwork classes and thoroughly enjoyed the experience that had been denied her while a day pupil a decade before. Thanks to Janet and Mark Tillman.

These partnerships are also welcome within the school to give students an extra boost through various programmes which would not be available without parent input. examples of these programmes are our group of Parent reading tutors whom work alongside 2 students three times a week and the Perceptual Motor Programme which helps enhance our tāmariki’s movement skills and understanding of language. Including and encouraging parents to be active participants within learning discussions is another growth area

at Merrin. These opportunities are provided through our Merrin ICt Community Blog providing instant online support and information about BYOD and digital citizenship through a specially designed portal, giving parents interactive responses to questions. There is a regular Monday Parent Drop in Centre for parents to ask questions while having a chat and cup of coffee. Parent information workshops also pop up regularly throughout the year on a variety of topics. Merrin is always looking for ways to enhance and grow our partnership with parents for the benefit of all our tāmariki.

HealTH & BeauTY

Keeping TracK Of YOur HealTH Lets take a look at the new fitness sensation Fitbit. What is it and how does it work? Most importantly, how do we incorporate it into our fitness regime? Fitbit consists of a family of products designed to track every part of your day – including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep – to help you stay motivated, and see how small steps make a big impact. There’s something for every taste, budget and technical requirement from the everyday category of wrist bands to performance-specific watches. All Fitbit products track steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes. All but the most basic Fitbit also track sleep patterns. At the performance end of the range you’ll also have access to things like heart rate and GPS tracking. All of the products feature wireless syncing and online and mobile tools, such as the Fitbit app to help track your exercise, sleep, hydration and food, and connect with friends. Seeing your progress can really help you realise what’s possible, and investing in a Fitbit may help to take you on the next step of your health and fitness journey. Fitbit was built on the premise that fitness is not just about gym time; it’s

about all the time. So, it can be a great addition to your fitness regime.

There are many things to consider when choosing a health and fitness regime to follow through with.

for example: • What type of exercise to choose: indoor, outdoor or a mixture of both? Running, walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, pilates, dancing, group fitness, a team sport, or something else? • Who to exercise with: just yourself, with a buddy, in a group, or to enlist the help of a personal trainer? • What nutrition guidelines to follow: enlist the help of a nutritionist, or just cut back on processed food, for example? • Balance: how will you ensure you get a good balance of enough rest and recovery as well as the right frequency, duration and intensity of exercise? • Motivation: how will you motivate yourself to get out the door in the first place?! Professional advice from a registered exercise professional should always be your first port of call. They can help get you set up with an appropriate personalised programme, help you with exercise techniques, and help you stay accountable to your goals. Once you’re in the swing of things you may find you want some extra assistance to ramp up your progress towards your goals. investing in a Fitbit could help you to achieve this, especially if you’re a ‘details’ person who likes to be well organised and able to measure progress from each and every workout. Similarly, if you find you’re in a bit of a rut and could do with a mini accountability ‘buddy’, then a Fitbit could be just the ticket.

A game changer in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease If you have Parkinson’s disease, you cannot afford to underestimate the benefits of exercise. Being sedentary is one of the fastest ways to see your symptoms get worse. To be the best you can be, consider a revolutionary Parkinson’s programme, PD Warrior, run by Muscle People Physiotherapy. “Exercise needs to be a front line defence for people with Parkinson’s disease. PD Warrior aims to re-wire the brain to allow everyday movements and activities to be performed with greater ease. Just like your muscles benefit from cross- training, your brain also benefits from being challenged and surprised.” Melissa McConaghy, co-founder of PD Warrior and Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist. Purposeful movement can combat the loss of motor control seen in Parkinson’s disease. PD Warrior combines a high effort, intensive work-out with a challenging combination of movements and mental strategy. It is designed for people with early stage or mild Parkinson’s disease with the aim of slowing down the progress of the disease. “PD Warrior is loads of fun and can get very loud with plenty of variety to keep people engaged. you get to connect with like-minded people who want to fight their symptoms,” says Laurie Moore, Director of Muscle People Physiotherapy. Neil, from Rangiora, has been attending the PD Warrior programme and says; “The exaggerated movement keeps the body moving rather than seizing up”. Neil keeps up the exercises at home during the week and

says “that’s how you get the most benefit out of it.” He has been playing more golf and is able to work a couple of days a week. Muscle People has helped clients achieve some significant milestones through PD Warrior. Those who come to the PD Warrior circuit style programme at the city clinic each week report feeling more confident in their movements and are able to move more freely and get back into life. The first step in the PD Warrior programme is an assessment at Muscle People Physiotherapy. for more information or to book your assessment telephone the friendly team at Muscle People on 360 3606.” PD Warrior not only re-trains your brain, it also helps you to get •
